A Good Read

This section will eventually contain a list of travel books recommended by our Bespoke Travel Club members. Posted on monthly basis we will have ten short ‘must read’ reviews to whet your appetite.

While the members are busy rummaging in their luggage for those literary gems, here is some fascinating reading from one of our newest members – Ancestral Footsteps. Three short case notes from ancestry projects covering Jewish, Irish and English ancestries

A great read about Rome is John Fort’s ‘The Companion Guide to Rome’ which really is the most brilliant companion whilst you are there.

The other great companion is John himself who has lived in Rome for 34 years and does wonderful private tours of the city. He is brilliant at judging your mood as energy levels start to flag, a wonderful ice cream shop suddenly appears around the corner! Emily Fitzroy of Bellini Travel can help guests arrange a fun filled few days in Rome and a tour with John.

David Downie’s excellent essays on Paris

On the recent death of my childhood hero of Patrick Leigh Fermor, I was reminded of his wonderful book “Between the woods and the water”, written hot on the heals of “A time of gifts”, which followed his 1933 walk from the hook of Holland to Constantinople. The 2nd book continues the journey down the Danube from Budapest; on horseback across the great Hungarian plain and over the Rumanian Border into Transylvania. A fascinating look at an old fashioned Europe about to be ravaged by war but then still stuck in another century and wonderfully gentle & welcoming.
